Exercise-associated muscle cramps

چکیده
E xercise-associated muscle cramping (EAMC) is a common condition that requires medical attention during sporting events. It is common among athletes who participate in long-distance endurance events, such as triathlon and marathon or ultra-marathon distance running, and it is documented in many other sports, including basketball, the various football codes, tennis, cricket and cycling.1 The prevalence of EAMC has been reported for triathletes (67%),2 marathon runners (between 30% and 50%),2 rugby players (52%)1 and cyclists (60%).1 Despite the high prevalence of EAMC, its risk factors, pathophysiology, treatment and prevention are not completely understood. Muscle cramping can occur as a symptom of a variety of medical conditions. These include genetic causes, muscular diseases, endocrine and metabolic diseases, hydroelectrolyte disorders, and toxic and pharmacological agents.3 This article focuses on EAMC, and excludes muscle cramping in smooth muscle, cramping at rest and cramping associated with any underlying disease or drugs.

Exercise-associated Muscle Cramps in Runners: A Review
Objective: Exercise-associated Muscle Cramp (EAMC) is an intense, painful, and involuntary contraction of skeletal muscles during a physical activity. Runners are more prone to this syndrome than other athletes. The present paper aims to review of the literature on EAMC in runners to determine the reasons and nature of EAMC in this sports field. Methods: A search was conducted for related stud...

BERGERON, M.F. Muscle cramps during exercise V is it fatigue or electrolyte deficit? Curr. Sports Med. Rep., Vol. 7, No. 4, pp. S50YS55, 2008. Skeletal muscle cramps during exercise are a common affliction, even in highly fit athletes. And as empirical evidence grows, it is becoming increasingly clear that there are two distinct and dissimilar general categories of exercise-associated muscle cr...
متن کاملFactors associated with night-time calf muscle cramps: a case-control study.
INTRODUCTION Although highly prevalent and painful, night-time calf muscle cramping is poorly understood, and no treatment has shown consistent efficacy or safety. METHODS One hundred sixty adults were recruited from New South Wales, Australia, including 80 who had night-time calf cramping at least once per week and 80 age- and gender-matched adults who did not. Participants were assessed usi...

ABSTRACT Background and Aim : Muscle cramp is one of the common complications of hemodialysis. Muscular contractions, called cramps, typically occurs in the lower extremities. The three most important predisposing factors are (a) hypotension, (b) low dry weight, and (c) use of low sodium dialysis solution. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of isotonic and isometric exercises o...
متن کاملOrigin and development of muscle cramps.
Cramps are sudden, involuntary, painful muscle contractions. Their pathophysiology remains poorly understood. One hypothesis is that cramps result from changes in motor neuron excitability (central origin). Another hypothesis is that they result from spontaneous discharges of the motor nerves (peripheral origin). The central origin hypothesis has been supported by recent experimental findings, ...
متن کاملNocturnal leg cramps.
Up to 60 percent of adults report that they have had nocturnal leg cramps. The recurrent, painful tightening usually occurs in the calf muscles and can cause severe insomnia. The exact mechanism is unknown, but the cramps are probably caused by muscle fatigue and nerve dysfunction rather than electrolyte or other abnormalities. Nocturnal leg cramps are associated with vascular disease, lumbar c...
